A major cyber-attack caused digital havoc when it targeted the NHS and many business services across the UK last week. The ransomware known as WannaCrypt maliciously took advantage of a security vulnerability found on 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries worldwide. Once a PC is infected, all files are encrypted by the ransomware and locked behind a paywall, forcing the user to comply or risk losing their files.
According to a number of reports, the WannaCrypt ransomware was developed from the EternalBlue exploit publicly stolen from the National Security Agency (NSA) in the US earlier this year. Microsoft issued a patch for all supported Windows systems in March when the exploit originally came to light.
While those who have already installed the critical update remain unaffected, devices which were left unprotected – including users on unsupported operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 – would be at severe risk of infection. Since WannaCrypt can be executed remotely and does not require the user to click on a malicious link or open any email attachments, it acts like a worm and replicates itself through the network so it can infect other computers quickly.
Microsoft released an update through Windows Defender on Friday to urge customers on all Windows operating systems to apply the MS17-010 hotfix update as soon as possible, more information can be found here.
There are several other ways your clients can protect themselves against future ransomware attacks. Installing a cybersecurity solution such as Bitdefender GravityZone from Giacom Cloud Market means they will be protected against zero-day threats, viruses and ransomware. In fact, Bitdefender GravityZone clients were automatically protected from WannaCrypt ransomware, as the cybersecurity software vendor stated in an informative blog post last week. Coupling this with our Acronis Backup Cloud offering means should you get hit, you’ll always have a backup – meaning no payout for the criminals.
It’s important that all your clients are aware of the security implications of ransomware and how disastrous the consequences can be.
